Things we do with nature
With respect to hillsides, when we plan to suit only our immediate needs and make changes without regard to nature, or to others around us, we are no longer in harmony with our surroundings. We are in fact fighting against nature.
We slash, cut, fill and dump rubbish and earth everywhere without regard to how it affects others, our surroundings, and eventually, even us in the future. This invites trouble. This is the beginning of numerous future slips, landslides and erosions. We-by our indifference or ignorance-lay the seeds for future disasters.
Quite often, our bad construction methods become obvious even before we complete our projects. However, at this point we usually have gone too far to backtrack. At this point, the only thing we can do is to keep providing changes to mitigate the problems which are more cosmetic than effective. Our grassed slopes continue to erode, our drainage structures become unstable, and our construction remains subject to rapid erosion.
If we were to take a ride anywhere, we will find our bad construction methods are obvious and on display everywhere. Overall, we pay more in repairs and redoing bad work than doing things right in the first place.
